Senator Al Franken formally announced his support for DFL candidate Carly Melin today, joining a growing list of DFL legislators.

Franken said, “I am proud to be joining Commissioner Tony Sertich, Senator David Tomassoni and Representative Tom Rukavina in supporting Carly Melin. Carly will continue the long-standing tradition of strong DFL representation on the Iron Range. Like Tony has done before her, Carly will ensure Range values are well represented in St. Paul. Franken will join Melin, campaign staff, and volunteers at an event from 12:00 pm -1:00 pm on Sunday, February 13th,  at the Melin Campaign Headquarters, 2905 4th Ave E, Hibbing, MN 55746. Members of the community are encouraged to attend.

Hibbing- DFL Primary Election winner Carly Melin announced today that she has received the endorsement from former Majority Leader and District 5B State Representative Tony Sertich. Sertich has been appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to lead the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) as its Commissioner. He served Northeastern Minnesota as representative for 10 years.

Sertich said “The focus in my new position will be on job creation by strengthening our local and existing businesses. I know Carly Melin. She worked for me in the Minnesota Legislature. Carly has the right skills and the best vision for helping get our economy moving once again.”

Carly Melin said “I appreciate the support from Commissioner Sertich and look forward to developing a plan that works for our local businesses and uses our local taconite taxes to invest in our own, local companies. The best way for our communities to succeed is for all generations to work together and build on the strengths we have while attracting new talent for the future.”

Sertich added, “Voters are being bombarded with a lot negative messages, but Carly Melin has shown she can stand up under pressure to put forth a positive message of job growth, respect for our senior citizens, and good educational opportunities for the next generation. She has proven that the Iron Range is in her blood and she has the passion to do a great job for our region. Please vote for Carly Melin on Tuesday and send a strong, positive message to St. Paul.”

Carly Melin won the DFL primary election with over 50% of the vote and has received the endorsement from area mayors, nurses, teachers, community leaders, business owners, and labor. The general election for state representative will be held on Tuesday, February 15th.

Hibbing- DFL Primary Election winner Carly Melin announced today that Mayors from around the district have endorsed her for state representative. The cities include Hibbing, Chisholm, and Floodwood.

Hibbing Mayor Rick Cannata said, “As a group of Mayors, we see Carly Melin as an energetic and strong voice for local issues such as improvements in infrastructure, support for basic municipal services, and an advocate for job creation in our communities. We are proud to enthusiastically recommend her to the voters.”

Carly Melin said, “I thank the Mayors for their support and for their front line work delivering services to the people. Unlike my opponent, I won’t go to St. Paul and cut funding for Chisholm, Hibbing, or Floodwood. I’ll fight for Local Government Aid to keep property taxes down. My opponent will raise property taxes with his support for the Republican Agenda in St. Paul.”

Chisholm Mayor Mike Jugovich said, “We tell our young people to get a good education, find work you enjoy, and come back to the Iron Range to help our communities prosper. Carly Melin did just that. Her opponent attacks her for it, but Carly is an Iron Ranger through and through, and I’m proud to support her.”

Mayor Jeff Kletscher from Floodwood said, “Carly Melin visited our communities and listened to our concerns. We know she’ll do that in the future as our representative.”

Former Hibbing Mayor Rick Wolff also endorsed Melin, saying “Carly has the smarts, the skills, and the energy to work for our people. I’m finding people from all walks of life are supporting Carly because she represents the best of the Iron Range.”

Melin won over 50% of the vote in the Primary Election. The general election for state representative will be held on Tuesday, February 15th.

Hibbing- DFL Primary Election winner Carly Melin announced today that all of her primary election competitors have endorsed her candidacy. Melin was endorsed by Mayor Jeff Kletscher from Floodwood, Ray Pierce, Jr. from Hibbing, former State Representative John Spanish, and Shelley Robinson from Hibbing.

Melin said, “I stand ready with the support of Mayor Kletscher, Ray Pierce, Jr., Rep. Spanish, and Shelley Robinson, to protect working people, support our seniors, improve our schools, and be a strong advocate for Northern Minnesota.”

Melin added, “I want to thank all of the people who place their faith in me to be a passionate and compassionate advocate for our area. I’m humbled and proud of their support; I extend my appreciation to the other candidates who all ran impressive and positive campaigns. I thank them for endorsing me for the general election on February 15^th.”

Mayor Kletscher said “I now throw my support to Carly because of her willingness to reach out to the people from the south end of the district. She showed concern for our issues and I’m confident she will make a great representative.”

Ray Pierce, Jr. joined Kletscher in supporting Melin. “Carly will stand for workers and for new jobs in mining and natural resources. She represents the best in the next generation of Iron Range leadership.”

Shelley Robinson immediately endorsed Melin, saying “with the primary election behind us, it is important for all DFLers to rally behind Carly Melin in her pursuit of the MN House 5B seat.”

In an impressive victory, Melin received over 50% of the vote and won most of the precincts throughout the district. The general election is Tuesday, February 15^th.

I know Carly Melin is the candidate with an aptitude for public office, who also knows that it is a privilege to serve.

She believes and lives the ideals of family, education and union jobs and will lead district 5B with purpose and principle.  Worthy of our trust.  This is what a genuine politician should be.  This is Carly.

We regret, some gripe, that our kids can’t come back to northern Minnesota after college to secure a good job and raise a family.  Like Carly, I was born, raised and graduated in Hibbing.  I too spent time in St. Paul & Duluth, 6 years to get educated, and am glad that I can pass this education on in Hibbing (30^th yr. and counting).  A “girl hand-picked, by out-of-town lobbyists”?   5B is not just Hibbing, and the state Senate is in St. Paul.  We should be pleased and excited that one of our best and brightest has the initiative, drive, and courage to stand up for us in the MN House.

5^th Senate District DFL Endorses Carly Melin for MN House District 5B

Hibbing- Today the 5^th Senate District DFL announced its endorsement of DFLer Carly Melin who is running for state representative in MN House District 5B.

Cathy Daniels, 5^th Senate District DFL Chair, stated “We are happy to announce our endorsement of Carly Melin. She represents the future of 5B. The DFL Party endorsed Carly because we need an advocate for senior citizens, our rural schools, and the working people of Northern Minnesota. The election is this Tuesday, February 1^st.  We are asking that all DFLers cast their ballot for Carly. She earned our endorsement because of her strong stance on the issues.”

Melin stated “I am truly humbled to have the DFL’s endorsement. Our rural communities in Northern Minnesota need a strong advocate down in St. Paul to represent them. The 5^th Senate District DFL held its endorsing convention today in Hibbing. Melin received support from over 60% of the delegates.

Melin Endorsed for Representative: AFSCME Council 5, AFSCME Council 65, and former Senators Ron Dicklich and Jerry Janezich

Hibbing- DFL candidate Carly Melin, vying for state representative, district 5B, wins the first major union endorsement in the election.  AFSCME Council 5 & AFSCME Council 65 endorsed Carly Melin because of her strong stands in support of workers.

Preble stated “We have a unique opportunity to support someone who shows a great understanding of the needs of the working people. She was raised in a union family and will fight for the working people of Minnesota. AFCSME Council 65 is proud to support DFLer Carly Melin. She thanked us for our support; we should be thanking her for being willing to run for public office.”

Melin added “We need to protect working people, services to seniors, and pensions for those who worked so hard to earn them. I am ready to do that. There is a Republican assault on unemployment benefits, training, and the rights to organize. The stakes are high and I am glad to have the working people behind me. I am proud to be the only labor endorsed candidate in the race.”

Dennis Frazier said, “I have worked with Carly’s mom for twenty five years. I have known Carly’s father, who served in the armed forces and as a public servant teaching at Hibbing Community and Technical College for twenty seven years. She was raised in a good union family and her parents taught her the importance of public service. She is one of us. Carly currently works as a public servant herself for the state. Her youth and energy will prove vital down at the capitol and for our communities.”

Former Senator Ron Dicklich stated “Carly is a solid DFLer that has lived by DFL principles her whole life. She knows the issues that concern our region:  aid to cities, funds for rural schools, and the importance of protecting services to seniors.  Because of her age she will be a leader in this state both today and in the future. She will be a strong voice for the Iron Range. “

And former Senator Jerry Janezich said “My wife Patty and I are supporting Carly Melin because she is bright, energetic, and hardworking. She will be the best representative for the future of our communities”

Melin said “I want to thank the workers of AFSCME who had faith in my candidacy and endorsed me and for the support of two outstanding former District 5 senators, Ron Dicklich and Jerry Janezich.  I hope to work as hard for the people as did Ron and Jerry.”

Melin Campaign wins support from Hibbing Clerk Pat Garrity and
announces Metsa as Manager

Hibbing- Carly Melin announced that Pat Garrity, twenty-nine year Hibbing
City Clerk, will support Melin in her bid for state representative in the upcoming
February 1 special election.

Garrity said “We need a common sense approach to leadership. I am concerned
that within the current political climate Greater Minnesota will be left to fend for
itself. We need someone with both strong leadership skills and an understanding of
fiscal responsibility. Our local cities and municipalities are going to need a strong
advocate and friend. I believe that friend is Carly Melin.”

Carly Melin said “I’m proud to earn the support of Clerk Garrity. I love his passion
for good, responsible, and effective local government. My job, if elected as your
state representative, is to protect local government aid to our small cities and
towns while reaching out to businesses to help them expand and create jobs.”

Garrity went on to say “It is important to have someone who understands how
law affects our communities. Our Local Government Aid (LGA) funding has been
substantially reduced and we need someone who will support healthy initiatives in
the Minnesota Legislature. That is why I decided to join the Melin for Representative
Campaign Committee. I have served Hibbing for 29 years as City Clerk and know
she’d make a great contribution to our communities.”

With the February 1st DFL Primary just around the corner, Melin has been working
closely with her new campaign manager Jason Metsa.

Melin said “Jason came highly recommended by my campaign committee. His
experience and inspiration will prove vital over the next thirteen days.”

Metsa stated “Carly Melin is an exciting candidate that can win, and she’s fun to
work with. I appreciate the chance to support her efforts.”

Jason Metsa was the former Field Director for the Tom Rukavina for Governor
Campaign. Metsa has been a prolific DFL campaigner in the 8th Congressional
District in recent years. He also worked for the Minnesota State DFL Party in
support of Mark Dayton.
